Diaries, 1859-1871.

Diaries (1859-1871) kept by Cain while he was a farmer in Kansas and Captain of the 12th Regiment U.S. Colored Infantry in the Civil War. The majority of entries relate to his life as a farmer, covering such topics as weather, crops, personal data, and some observations of the local politics in Kansas. Most volumes have a list of personal expenditures at the end. Biographical sketch included with diaries; loose invoice in volume for 1871.
